Reaching Jakarta

Visiting Green Canyon and Green Valley in Pangandaran were amazing but it was a pretty touristy place as well. We kept cycling West and decided to stay along the coast instead of turning inland in direction of Bandung. Our hope was to leave the business of Java behind and our effort was rewarded. Without any bigger cities along our way, there was not much traffic and cycling was just great: The road lead us through rolling hills, rubber tree forests and along the coast. The little towns along the way did not have much to offer but at least we found some cheap hotels there.

One day Vroni started not feeling well while cycling and after only 50km we called it a day and checked into a small hotel we found. It turned out that she had a quite high fever and felt really sick for the whole rest of the day. We decided that resting would be the best for her and I started looking for a doctor in the area in case her situation would get worse. Unfortunately there was no doctor to be found anywhere and we finally decided to take a bus to the town of Sukabumi the next morning. The bus was to leave at 6am and it took 4h to cover the 100km to Sukabumi as the road was winding and parts were in a very bad condition. Our bikes and panniers were strapped to the roof of the bus and every pothole made us question whether all of them would arrive with us. In the end it all went well and we reached Sukabumi safely.

Vroni was still sick for the rest of the day and started feeling much better the next morning. At that time we were planning on leaving the next day but in the afternoon I started getting stomach cramps and started feeling really sick. We ended up staying in Sukabumi for four nights until we both felt better and ready for cycling again. A quick 60km cycle got us to the city of Bogor where we were welcomed by Ken and Fareea, two amazing Warmshowers hosts. Our time with them was great and their three lovely cats made our stay even better. We shared delicious meals, had nice conversations and in the evening we went out to watch some Football Worldcup matches.

After three lovely nights we finished cycling in Indonesia by reaching my friend Ahnaf's place in Jakarta. We relaxed for a few days before we drove Bandung together for two nights. Our way to Bandung took 8 hours and it is only 170km - traffic is just insane here. The next day we went to a National Park and hiked along a nice river through the forest. We came past some deer and a big waterfall. In the afternoon we visited a floating market, a pretty Indonesian tourist attraction, but still a nice place. We had fun walking around and trying different kinds of food. Next morning we did not want to make the same mistake again and decided to leave at 4:30 am to avoid traffic. At 8 am we arrived back in Jakarta and enjoyed the last two quiet days before flying to Malaysia where we will keep on cycling.

Our 90 days in Indonesia were fascinating, beautiful and sometimes downright crazy. We experiences many different faces of the country, but after three months it's time and exciting to move on.

We are looking forward to exploring Malaysia,

Keep on cycling,

Joni, Droni and Vroni
