Let's go to China

We had a great time back on the cattle station in Australia. It was the perfect place to spend Christmas and New Years and experience it the Aussie way. Like this we could wait out the Chinese winter and start cycling in early Spring as well as leave China two months later and be in Central Asia for the perfect season for cycling.

We left Australia in the end of February and flew back to Hong Kong where our bicycles and most of our stuff was waiting for us. We had found an amazing host in Hong Kong, Phil from Warm Showers, where we had left all of it. We had chosen Hong Kong, because apparently it's a good place to apply for the visa for China. We decided to apply without an agency and prepared all the paper work (20 pages each). It didn't take too long and we left the building even with the possibility of getting a 60 days visa. Woohoo!

The visa application process takes about 4 working days, so the next few days we spent exploring Hong Kong and its surroundings like Lamma Island, Victoria Peak (of course), the night market and we also went shopping for a new camera (Canon M50 + lenses) After four working days we went to pick up the visa and.... We got the 60 days right away. That's so perfect and it's going to save us some time in China as we don't have to extend a 30 day visa.

We decided to leave Hong Kong by ferry and went to Macau. Still, the first days were mostly bigger roads, towns and traffic heading towards Guilin. The weather was amazing for cycling (18-20°), but mostly cloudy and rainy especially during the nights. After almost two years of Summer it was really nice. The Chinese people are nice but rather shy and nobody spoke any English. Communication is a bit hard even though our few words and Google translate helped a lot. Just before getting into Wuzhou we met a road cyclist on our way. He spoke English and we cycled the last 20km into town together talking. Louis, that's him, invited us for dinner and showed us around in town. We had an amazing evening together with him and friends of his and talked a lot. From there on to Yangshuo we followed smaller roads and rivers through the mountains. It was a really nice scenery. After 10 days of cycling we arrived in Yangshuo and we will enjoy a few days of rest now and exploring the area.

Back on the road,

Kepp cycling.
