Reaching Darwin was our next milestone and it was time to sell our car (after just two weeks but 6000km). Within one day we managed to find a buyer and we had to say goodbye to our thirsty Shelly. In Darwin we stayed with a WarmShowers host called Fleur and her son and there we also met some other cyclists that were on their way to Asia. Max, Audrey and Alessio were great company for the few days we stayed and we got some nice insights for our upcoming route as they were all coming from the direction we were about to go.

On Wednesday, September 6, we finally got back on the road. After taking a small ferry from Darwin to Mandorah, we cycled towards Litchfield Nationalpark and met the two German cyclists Ina and Mirko along the way. It was so nice to finally be back on a bike, driving was just too fast for us. The temperature during the day averages 36°C but with a little bit of breeze while cycling it is surprisingly bearable. In Litchfield Nationalpark we were spoilt to have a nice waterhole or waterfall every 20km to cool off. Walker Creek, Wangi Falls, Florence Falls and Buley Rockhole were the highlights in the park.

From there we had to go along the bigger Stuart Highway to get to Katherine. One evening we wanted to get off the highway and decided to stay at a free campsite at Robin Falls but our lovely evening was disrupted by a bushfire that was about to jump into the campsite – so we had to cycle 15km back to Adelaide River at 9pm. Within the next days we stayed at a small campsite in Hayes Creek that had a nice creek to swim in and a small canyon that was filled with thousands of butterflies – just awesome. Just before reaching Katherine we finished a long 7h and 125km day at Edith Falls with its nice plunge pool and waterfall. In Katherine we stocked up our supplies, got organized and ready to head West in direction of Kununurra and Broome.

All the best from Australia,
Keep cycling,
Vroni, Droni & Joni
