Leaving Katherine meant for us to really start cycling in a more remote area of Australia for the first time. Our bags were filled with pasta, rice, couscous, beans and more and Jonas' kickstand even broke under all that weight. We had some pretty good days on the Victoria Highway as it was pretty flat and less busy than the Stuart Highway. With only few things to look at or visit we cycled long days and finished the 520km in just four days. On day three we had some nice tailwind and managed to do 175km within 8h - nice.
Just before reaching Kununurra we passed the border into Western Australia and had to throw out our two last onions and garlic as they do not allow you to bring in any fresh fruit and veggies. The time zone changed again and we gained 1,5h, meaning we had to start getting up at 4:00 am to be on the road by sunrise.
In Kununurra we planned to stay for two nights to have time to rest and restock before tackling the infamous Gibb River Road, a 650km mostly gravel road through the Kimberleys. In the afternoon of day two we then got invited to tag along to a nice waterfall next morning which was said usually not to be accessible for tourists. That was an offer we could not refuse and decided to join Frank and do other people from our campsite to take that hike. It was a really nice gorge with a few waterfalls and we were the only ones there. The extra day also allowed us to visit Kangaroo Haven, a rescue station for baby kangaroos (called joeys). There we bottle-fed and held little cute joeys which was just amazing.
From Kununurra we then started towards the Gibb River Road, taking a back road hoping to get out of traffic but the road was really bad with corrugated and very sandy sections that made it awful to cycle. In the evening we treated us with going to a paid campsite with a nice pool to relax from the day.
All the best from Australia,
Vroni, Droni and Joni
